In May 2024, a local resident, Rebecca Bathory visited Old Knobberly in Mistley a place that holds deep meaning for her. While there, she discovered a small sapling growing beneath its canopy. It was carefully taken home and planted it in a pot.
This sapling is particularly special because, since protective wood chippings have been placed around the base of Old Knobbley, it no longer produces new saplings. For the past two years, it has been cared for in its pot. Although it hadn’t grown much likely due to being root-bound it continues to come to life each spring with fresh leaves.
Rebecca hoped to give this descendant of Old Knobbley the opportunity to grow into a strong tree and noticing a natural gap among the line of trees at Bradfield Recreation Ground she enquired to the BAARGC for permission to plant the tree there. It felt, to Rebecca like the perfect spot, almost as though it was meant to be there.
Bradfield Recreation Ground and Allotments Charity reviewed Rebecca's request and were delighted at the prospect of growing this new tree, and it has been aptly nicknamed 'New Knobbley'.
The tree is well protected and cared for regularly, and all look forward to watching this special oak mature and become a landmark in its own right within the Recreation Ground. Residents and visitors are encouraged to keep an eye on its progress and take pride in this unique connection between Bradfield and the historic Old Knobbley oak of Mistley.
